John Stroomer - Studio Pottery Artist

John Stroomer is an accomplished potter who has been potting for more than 37 years employing 23 potters during the 1980s and early 90s producing hand thrown domestic ware for the Australian market.

He is now, more than ever, committed totally to the growth of his creative soul and the pursuit of the elusive and often volatile Ceramic Crystalline Glaze.

With an insatiable and ever-growing passion for his work ... the challenge of Crystalline is all encompassing in his life. He is an award winning artist whose work is held in public and private collections in Australia and overseas. His strong elegant shapes are sought after by collectors who appreciate his technical virtuosity, pure organic forms and unique crystalline glazes.

Studio Ceramics - Forms

John has a passion for and is inspired by organic forms, soft sensual classical curves and flowing lines. Nothing challenges his skills more on the potters wheel than the bottle form and the curve. From narrow foot emerging into wide bellied balanced ovoid, soft shoulders flowing into elegant narrow necks....structure and soft changes in direction are a constant challenge to refining ones technical skill to achieve the perfect form.

Ceramic Crystalline Glazes

His passion for ceramic crystalline glazes is never ending. Sensitive to the slightest change in temperature or material.....the exacting nature, temperature control and understanding of glaze technologies demanded by the Crystalline process is all encompassing.

The structural building blocks and ordered randomness of nature creates and repeats itself in many ways. Growth rings in tree sections and the outward circular growth patterns of coral atolls are all a consequence of time and a phenomena of nature. Seen from high above, the rivulets and sand ridges formed in the outback deserts and the intricate patterns in butterfly wings.... nature building structures on a microscopic level but in reality repeating those structures in many different forms....the growth of crystals among them.

His crystalline glazes are fluid and organic, metamorphosing the pots within the white hot fire of the kiln before they emerge into the world encased in a high quality finish, sparkling with an array of alluring and brilliant crystal formations. Like gems from deep beneath the earths crust, crystals within the glaze matrix refract light giving my pots a three dimensional unique organic quality which cannot be matched by any other glaze finish.
